Downstream from the falls, the Niagra River runs in a huge gorge. You can
actually climb down a seemingly endless series of steps to get to the
bottom, and then walk along a precarious pathway and climb over huge piles
of rocks in order to see the Niagra River impressively crashing about and
looking menacing. There's also this really cool big whirlpool with a
cable-car running over it, but that was on the Canadian side. This is
a picture of the first set of standing waves, where the water piles up
pretty impressively.
Here is Kris walking down the pathway to certain doom! The rocks were
really interesting, and I wish I had taken a picture of how imposing the
walls of the cliff are. And despite how remote this place looks, up on
top of the cliffs is pretty built up, both on the American and Canadian
sides.
Further upstream at the more impressive Standing Waves. The rock upon
which we were sitting would be splashed by whitewater in a frightening
manner now and then.
Another view of the water. It's a lot more impressive in person, it was
hard trying to take a picture when it looked dramatic. Anything short of
an IMAX movie wouldn't do it justice, and even then you really have to see
it to believe it. And this is with the Hydro-electric plant stealing most
of the water and power from the river.
