The Patriots' Day Nor'easter

Kristina and I had actually given up on the snow ever getting here, as they kept predicting it, but all we got were flurries that didn't stick. The barometer kept falling though, and when we woke up Monday morning (this is mid April) we had a decent amount of snow on the ground!

Here is a view from my walk in to work:

Here is a view of the Thurston Ave Bridge Reconstruction, which has been the source of many annoying detours. I think it looks cool in the snow. Unfortunately for them they stopped construction in November, after which we had record warmth straight through until February. Then when they re-started construction it got cold and snowy. The flowers are way behind normal due to the cold. No forsythia yet and the daffodils look a bit sad:

I thought the snow would stop, but it kept going all day. It was a wet snow and the trees weren't coping well. Here you can see how deep the snow was on a fence:

For some reason, the peak snow seemed centered on Ithaca and we got snow all day even though nearby traditionally snowy places like Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse had transitioned to rain. Despite all of this, it's supposed to be 65° on Friday, so it won't last long.

The local birds were smart enough to dig to find bird food on our deck. Here's a Junco digging deep; usually they have gone away by this time of year:

This was a record snow for Ithaca in April. We had been about a foot below average on snow this year, so I guess this was the weather trying to even things out. The odd thing is that downtown Ithaca, only a mile or so away, only got 2" of snow or so. This is probably due to its 600ft lower elevation.

With Spring coming for real soon, hopefully I'll have more interesting pictures to post in the near future.
