Bud Brook Falls - June 2006
Yet another cloudy and cold weekend. Kristina and I are having
to go further afield to find new waterfalls. This time we went
to Bud Brook Falls on the
Finger Lakes Trail
in Dryden.
The Finger Lakes Trail doesn't necessarily connect all of the Finger Lakes.
It starts in the Catskills and goes to Western Pennsylvania (it is part
of the much larger
North Country National Scenic Trail which goes the whole way to
North Dakota).
We started at the Jim Schug trail and then followed the Finger Lakes trail
along a road, and then across a pasture (under the watchful eyes of some
horses in an adjacent field). The trail then went up a large hill.
We scared some pretty big turkeys, and we managed to really upset
some robins in the area. We got to the top of the hill, but then
the trail went right down the other side.
We exited to another field, staying along the treeline, and then we
arrived at Bud Brook.
The falls weren't really that impressive, but our waterfall book
had warned us as much in advance:
We continued on the trail, winding through the woods a bit. There
was a special "field view" spur, marked in blue. We took it, and in
case you were wondering, here is what the view looked like:
We then returned the way we came. Along the route we got to climb
over a few stiles:
One of the stiles was broken so we also got to carefully climb under
a barb-wire fence.
We made it back safely, and this will be our last adventure in Tompkins
County for a while, stay tuned for another Western adventure...
