Lake George and Schroon Lake
We left Vermont and re-entered New York. There was one last waterfall on
our list to see. The directions we had were vague, and the road we were on
quickly became unpaved, and then became this bumpy trail up what seemed to
be a distant forgotten mountain in Adirondack Park. After what felt like
hours we parked in a likely area. We hiked down the trail and found
Lake George but no waterfall.
We hiked back up the hill, drove on, came to a dead end, so came back and
tried again, this time bringing the directions with us. We found the
side-trail, crossed a bridge, and followed a barely noticable trail up-stream.
After climbing over a huge pine tree that had fallen across the trail we
found it,
Shelving Rock Falls.
Or rather, we found the small falls below it. It was getting dark,
the trail was steep and slippery, and we decided to turn back. So we must
return some day and see the real falls! But you can look at the small falls
below.
It was dark now, and we traveled along Route 9 which is fairly desolate.
We did go by Loon Lake. And finally,
we reached our destination of
Schroon Lake.
Sorry for the poor quality. I should have gone in closer to take the picture.
The lake is still ice-covered anyway.
Why was I going to Schroon Lake? I went to a retreat with Kris and her family
and a large number of West Point cadets. That was interesting in and of
itself but I won't get into it here. There was lots of mini-golf,
easter-egg dyeing, and late April snowball fights, but also religious
introspection as you might guess.
On Sunday we drove back the more direct, less-scenic way and got stuck in
lots of Easter-Sunday traffic. And thus ended my Easter adventure.
